Pink Betta Fish: Real Colour or Poor Health

Updated November 2026

Most pink betta fish are not pink by design. True pink bettas exist, usually as a washed pastel form of the koi or marble lines, but they are uncommon. The pale, fleshy pink you see in pet shop tanks is far more often a betta that has lost its colour, and that is a health signal, not a morph.

The difference matters because the causes are the opposite of cosmetic. Stress, cold water, and ammonia burn all drain colour out of a betta in days. Buy a pale betta and you may be buying a fish that needs rescue, not a fish with rare genetics.

Reads pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate with liquid reagents and a color card, which tells you whether the pink is ammonia burn or genetics. It matches color by eye, so tea-tinted water can shade the result.

Real pink versus lost colour

A genuine pink betta shows even, deliberate colour from an early age, often with the soft pastel look of the koi and Nemo lines. It looks painted on. A sick or stressed fish looks drained instead: colour fades unevenly, horizontal stress stripes appear on the body, and the fish often clamps its fins or hides, the pattern we cover in why your betta is hiding.

Ammonia burn produces a specific look: red or raw patches, especially around the gills, that can read as pink from across the room. If the pink appeared suddenly in a new or uncycled tank, suspect water before genetics. Check the cycle with a liquid kit, not strips, and if the tank is new, start with our betta tank cycling guide.

Fixing the tank fixes the colour

Colour that faded from stress frequently comes back once conditions stabilize. Keep the temperature between 25 and 27 degrees Celsius, hold ammonia and nitrite at zero, and give the fish cover. Dark substrate and botanicals both help bettas settle, the same reasoning behind keeping driftwood tannins in your water. A varied diet rounds it out; see our betta food guide.

Give it two to three weeks after the water is clean before judging colour. A recovering fish often darkens and enriches noticeably, which tells you the pink was never its real palette.

Questions readers ask

Are pink betta fish rare?

Genuine pink colouration is uncommon and usually comes from koi or marble pastel lines. Most fish sold as pink are simply pale or stressed fish of ordinary colours.

Why did my betta turn pink or pale?

The usual causes are stress, cold water, or ammonia in an uncycled tank. Colour that fades fast is almost always environmental, not genetic.

Will the colour come back?

Often yes. Once temperature is stable and ammonia and nitrite read zero, stressed bettas usually regain colour within two to three weeks.
