Reviews & Gear

We compare manufacturer specifications, product labels and owner reports, and we name the source of each figure. For filters we look at rated flow, media volume and upkeep. For heaters we look at wattage, thermostat design and safety features. For lights we look at published PAR data where the maker provides it. We do not run in-tank tests.

Always size equipment for your actual tank volume plus a small margin. A filter rated for 20 gallons is minimum for a 10-gallon planted tank because plant debris reduces effective flow. When in doubt, size up on filtration and heating.
