Do Botanicals Lower pH? What the Water Chemistry Actually Shows

Botanicals lower pH only when your water has little carbonate hardness to resist them. Leaves, cones and bark release humic and tannic acids, but KH neutralises those acids before they move the needle. Above roughly 4 dKH you can add a pile of catappa and watch pH sit exactly where it started.
That is why two aquarists running the same leaf load report opposite results.
What Botanicals Actually Release
Decomposing leaves and pods leach tannins along with humic and fulvic acids. Those compounds tint the water and are weakly acidic.
They also bind some metal ions and are widely credited with mild antimicrobial activity, which is a separate benefit from any pH change.
KH Is the Gatekeeper
Carbonate hardness is your water’s acid buffer. Each acid molecule the leaves release gets consumed by carbonates before it can free a hydrogen ion and shift pH.
Drop KH toward 0 to 2 dKH, usually with RO water or a remineralised RO blend, and the same botanicals pull pH down noticeably. Keep KH at tap-water levels of 6 dKH or higher and the effect is close to nothing. The relationship is spelled out in the breakdown of GH and KH.
Low KH also means low buffering in general, so pH can swing. Test more often when you go that route.
Tint Is Not a pH Reading
Dark tea-coloured water proves tannins are present. It does not prove pH moved. Measure with a liquid test or a calibrated pen rather than judging by colour.
Tint per leaf also varies by species and by how long the botanical has been submerged. Fresh catappa releases hardest in the first week, then tapers, and the usage rates sit in the guide to catappa leaves.
Driftwood Behaves the Same Way
Wood leaches tannins on a slower curve than leaves, over months rather than weeks. Same rule applies: low KH means a real pH drop, high KH means tint without movement.
If your tank is browning faster than you want, the fix is water changes and activated carbon rather than pulling the hardscape, and the thresholds are covered in the notes on driftwood tannins.
If You Want a Lower pH on Purpose
Cut KH first with RO or rainwater, then add botanicals to hold the new level. Doing it in the other order gives you brown water and an unchanged reading.
Move slowly. Livestock tolerate a stable pH of 7.6 far better than one that drops a full point over a weekend.
