Best Aquarium Fish for Beginners: 9 Species That Forgive Week-One Mistakes
Updated October 2026
Zebra danios are the most forgiving first fish, according to Petco, and Seriously Fish rates all nine species below as Easy or Beginner. Check your tank’s base dimensions against the table, then cycle the tank before the first fish goes in, because no species forgives an uncycled tank.
Petco and Aqueon name several of these species in their own first-tank advice. The table adds each one’s minimum base, temperature and pH from Seriously Fish.
A rating describes the fish alone. Week one is when ammonia builds up in a new filter, which is why three pieces of gear sit above the species table.

Figures read from each species page at Seriously Fish in October 2026. Adult size is standard length, tail excluded. Minimum base is length by width.
Formula: volume = length x width x height / 231 cubic inches per US gallon. A species fits when your length and width meet its Seriously Fish minimum base. The check covers footprint only, not how many fish your filter can carry.
Which of these fish can share a tank?
Mixing works where the ranges overlap, and the table shows where they do not.
Platies and guppies start at pH 7.0, while ember tetras stop at 7.0 and harlequin rasboras at 7.5. A livebearer and an ember tetra meet at exactly one number, so choose a group that suits your tap water and stay inside its range.
Temperature splits the list too. White cloud mountain minnows run cool, 57 to 72 F, and meet the 72 F floor of both corys at a single point.
Group size matters as much as species. Seriously Fish advises at least 8 to 10 zebra danios and 6 to 10 cherry barbs, and Aqueon suggests 4 to 6 of the smaller corydoras and at least 3 livebearers, ideally one male to two or three females.
Corys live on the substrate, so Aqueon advises feeding them directly instead of relying on leftovers. Seriously Fish calls the panda cory sensitive to deteriorating water, and our panda cory care guide covers its cool water range and tank size.

What is the catch with each fish?
Every fish here has one drawback worth knowing before you buy.
Zebra danios need the longest base of the nine, 36 inches, and a group of 8 to 10 or more. Peppered corys need the widest, 15 inches front to back, which a typical 20 gallon long, about 12 inches wide, does not offer.
Platies and guppies breed readily. Petco says breeding is virtually inevitable when you keep male and female guppies together, and Seriously Fish expects continual batches of fry from platies.
Ember tetras are the smallest at 0.8 inch and lose out to boisterous tankmates. Cherry barbs call for 6 to 10 specimens, which is a real stocking cost in a small tank.
How long should you wait before adding fish?
Wait until ammonia and nitrite both read zero and nitrate shows up, which Petco puts at two to six weeks.
Petco calls skipping the cycle a leading cause of beginner fish illness and death. Our guide on how to cycle a betta tank lays out the fishless method, and the nitrogen cycle it describes applies to any freshwater tank.
A bacteria starter and a conditioner lower the risk during the wait, and the test kit tells you when it is over. Size helps as well: Petco says tanks of 20 gallons and up are more forgiving, because the chemistry changes slowly.
Is a betta a good first fish?
Sometimes, but Seriously Fish rates the betta Moderate, which is why it is not among the nine.
Petco lists bettas as beginner fish because they need little space. Seriously Fish gives an 18 by 12 inch minimum base and a 72 to 86 F range, so a heater belongs in the budget from day one.
Are neon tetras good for beginners?
Not reliably, which is why the most familiar tetra is missing from the table.
Petco rates the neon tetra Moderate, calls it more sensitive to water quality and says to add it to a fully cycled, established tank. For a 5 to 10 gallon tank, Aqueon says a school of neons needs at least 12 fish, with only corydoras or a bristlenose pleco for company.
Our neon tetra planted tank guide covers schooling numbers and footprint once your tank has matured.
Questions people ask about best aquarium fish for beginners
What is the easiest fish for a first aquarium?
Petco calls the zebra danio the most forgiving first fish because it tolerates broad temperature and water conditions. Seriously Fish rates it Easy and asks for a group of at least 8 to 10 in a 36 by 12 inch base.
Can you add fish to a new tank on day one?
Petco advises cycling the tank for two to six weeks first, because skipping the cycle is a leading cause of beginner fish illness and death. Test for ammonia and nitrite, and wait until both read zero.
Do beginner fish need a heater?
Seriously Fish's lower temperature limits run from 57 F for white cloud mountain minnows to 72 F for both corys. Measure your tank with a thermometer and compare it to the lowest limit in your group before skipping a heater.
What size tank do beginner fish need?
Seriously Fish minimum bases run from 18 by 12 inches for guppies, ember tetras and panda corys to 36 by 12 for zebra danios. Petco says tanks of 20 gallons or more are more forgiving because water chemistry stays stable.
