Beginner Aquarium Plants That Survive Neglect
Updated October 2026
The common aquarium plants that shrug off neglect are anubias, java fern, java moss, crypts, and vallisneria. missed water changes, weak light, and empty fertilizer bottles. They survive because they grow slowly and pull what they need from the water column. That same slow growth is also how they fail, and the difference is one algae bloom away.
Anubias and java fern
Both are rhizome plants, which means the fat horizontal stem must stay above the substrate. Bury it in gravel and it rots within weeks. Tie or glue them to wood and rock instead, and they will sit there for years asking nothing. Full details are in the Anubias care guide and the java fern care guide.
Crypts, and the melt to expect
Cryptocoryne wendtii is the tough one, and it still melts. Transplant shock dissolves the existing leaves into mush, usually within the first fortnight. Do not pull the rootstock. New leaves return in two to four weeks once it settles.
Vallisneria and the one thing it will not forgive
It grows in plain gravel under weak light, but vallisneria is a heavy root feeder. No iron at the roots means yellowing tips and thin strands that slowly shrink. Push a root tab into the substrate near the crown every two to three months, which is the entire maintenance budget for this plant. When to use tabs versus liquid dosing is covered in root tabs vs liquid ferts.
What neglect costs in the long run
Low light keeps these plants alive, not lush. Anubias adds a leaf every few weeks in a dim tank, which gives algae time to film the old leaves before new ones replace them. Wipe leaves during water changes or the green coat starts shading the plant. Java moss collects debris and clogs if never rinsed. These plants forgive forgetting; they do not forgive total abandonment.
Questions readers ask
Which of these plants work in a 5 gallon tank?
Anubias, java fern, and java moss comfortably. Vallisneria outgrows a 5 gallon within a season.
Do these plants need CO2?
None of them. All five photosynthesize fine at the CO2 levels plain tanks maintain, which is exactly why they are the standard beginner set. Adding CO2 speeds them up, but speed is rarely the problem in a low-tech tank.
Why did my crypt leaves dissolve after planting?
Crypt melt, a normal reaction to changed water conditions.
