10 Gallon Fish Tank: What Fits, What Does Not, and 4 Kits Worth Buying

Updated November 2026

A 10 gallon fish tank fits one betta plus 8 ember tetras or chili rasboras, or a dwarf shrimp colony started at 20 to 30, and it does not fit neon tetras, goldfish, angelfish or plecos. If you want the whole setup in one box, the Aqueon kit is the only one of the four below that ships with a heater.

Aqueon’s critical dimensions sheet puts its standard 10 gallon at 20 1/4 by 10 1/2 by 12 9/16 inches, and 111 pounds once filled. That 20 inch run decides what can swim in it.

Footprint matters more than the gallon number. Seriously Fish sizes small schooling fish by the base they need, and a 10 gallon only clears the smallest of them.

Formula: each fish counts its adult standard length in inches from Seriously Fish (betta 2.8, ember tetra and chili rasbora 0.8, pygmy cory 1.2), each dwarf shrimp 0.33, against 10 for a filtered 10 gallon. One inch per gallon is Tetra’s own rule of thumb and only holds for slim nano fish like these.

How many fish can you put in a 10 gallon tank?

About a dozen fish under an inch long, or one betta with a school of 8, fills a 10 gallon.

Seriously Fish lists ember tetras and chili rasboras at 20 mm standard length and suggests a base of at least 18 by 12 inches. The 10 gallon’s 20 by 10 1/2 inch footprint is close to that, and both species want groups of 8 to 10, so one school is your whole mid-water plan.

Pygmy corydoras reach 30 mm and want at least six, preferably ten. Unlike most corys they swim in midwater, so they share the school’s space.

If you want two schools plus a centrepiece, our 20 gallon fish tank guide shows what an extra 10 inches of length buys you.

What fish should not go in a 10 gallon tank?

Skip anything that outgrows a 20 inch run or needs a large school in open water.

Neon tetras catch people out. Seriously Fish recommends a base of 24 by 12 inches for them, 4 inches longer than a 10 gallon, and a school of 8 to 10.

Fancy goldfish grow to about 8 inches, angelfish carry 6 inches of body, and common plecos pass a foot. Stores sell all three small, which is how they end up in 10 gallon tanks.

Is a 10 gallon tank good for a betta?

Yes. It doubles the 5 gallon minimum, which gives the heater and filter a wider margin for a missed water change.

Seriously Fish lists the betta at 70 mm standard length and suggests 45 by 30 cm, about 18 by 12 inches, so a 10 gallon covers the fish with room for a small school.

Heat is the part three of these four kits skip. Aqueon’s heater chart puts a 10 gallon at 50 W for up to 10 F above room temperature and 100 W for 15 F. A 68 F room and an 80 F target is a 12 F gap, so buy the 100 W.

If a 10 gallon will not fit your desk, our best betta tanks comparison covers the 5 gallon options.

How much does a 10 gallon fish tank weigh?

About 111 pounds filled, against 11 pounds empty, by Aqueon’s figures.

Substrate and rock add to that, so set it on a stand or cabinet built for the load rather than a hollow shelf.

Sand and wood also displace water, so the real volume sits under 10 gallons. The aquarium calculator works out your true gallons from inside measurements.

Questions people ask about 10 gallon fish tank

Can a betta live with other fish in a 10 gallon tank?

Yes, with one school of small peaceful fish such as ember tetras or chili rasboras, or a group of pygmy corydoras. Skip fin-nippers and other labyrinth fish such as gouramis, and expect the betta to eat baby shrimp.

Do 10 gallon aquarium kits come with a heater?

Of the four kits on this page, only the Aqueon SmartClean kit includes one, a 50 W heater preset to 78 F. The Tetra, Marina and Fluval Flex kits need a heater bought separately.

How many shrimp can go in a 10 gallon tank?

Start a dwarf shrimp colony at 20 to 30, about 2 to 3 per gallon, and let it grow into the space. Shrimp add far less waste than fish, so the colony can grow well past that starting count.

What size is a 10 gallon fish tank?

Aqueon's standard 10 gallon measures 20 1/4 by 10 1/2 by 12 9/16 inches. Tetra lists its kit at 20 by 10 by 12 inches, and Marina lists its kit at 20 by 10 by 12.5 inches.
