Buying a Betta at PetSmart: Cup Condition and What It Predicts

A PetSmart betta arrives at the store young, stressed from shipping, and parked in a cup until someone buys it. That cup is the only health record you will ever get. Read it right and you pick a fish that recovers within days; read it wrong and you pay full price for a fish that was doomed before you walked in.

What the cup tells you

Water color comes first. Yellow or brownish water means the cup has not been changed recently, which is bad husbandry but says little about the fish. A betta that is upright, flaring at its neighbor, and holding its fins open in dirty water has real resilience.

Clean cups invert that read. Sparkling blue water with a pale fish lying flat and clamped is the worse sign, because the problem is inside the fish rather than in its upkeep.

Then check the body: steady breathing, no white salt-like specks of ich, no red streaks in the fins, clear eyes. Ragged fins predict a recoverable fin rot episode. A bloated body with raised scales does not predict anything you want.

What cup condition cannot predict

A healthy-looking cup says nothing about the tank you are about to provide.
