Our Position

We are not a shop. We do not sell fish, plants, or gear. We test products in real tanks, publish the data, and recommend what actually works. Our editorial process is fully independent. Brands do not pay for placement and never see our content before publication.

Testing Methodology

Every product recommendation is backed by hands-on testing in our own tanks. Filters run for 6+ weeks before we rate them. Substrate tests run 90 days minimum. We track water parameters daily during testing and publish the actual numbers, not marketing claims. When a product fails, we say so.

Independence Guarantee

We purchase all products at retail price. We do not accept free samples for review. Affiliate commissions fund our testing but never influence our ratings. If a product is bad, we say it is bad, even if it pays a commission. Our priority is your tank's success.

The Blackwater Perspective

TanninLab has a signature point of view: we believe botanicals and natural blackwater methods create healthier, less stressed aquarium inhabitants. We back this perspective with testing data, not ideology. When science contradicts a blackwater practice, we follow the science.

Our Tanks

We maintain 12 active test tanks ranging from 5 to 40 gallons, running both low-tech and high-tech setups across all six of our content categories. Water parameters are logged weekly. Maintenance is performed on a strict schedule. Our testing environment is designed to replicate real home aquarium conditions.
